The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is deeply worried at the state of the metro’s indigent policy. The current indigent policy allows residents who have an income of R 8 500 or below, to be declared as indigent. The payment of municipal services would subsequently be eased on them.

Under a DA-led government, we implemented and reviewed an indigent package aimed at making the application process easier. Our aim was to ensure the proper identification of residents, which would have empowered them to qualify for the programme.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s failure to address or continue with this programme has put them at the helm of widespread, unnecessary and irresponsible suffering brought on by their own lack of capabilities.

The executive in the City has to answer these questions:

- Is there is an indigent policy in place?

- If there is one, why is it not assisting those in need?

Residents in Ekurhuleni deserve to have a government who looks after their needs, moreover, we will not stand by and allow the city to walk over these residents.
