Ekurhuleni municipal water and sewerage systems and solid waste disposal cannot cope with the increased population density and poor sanitation of the informal settlement.
The residents of Tsietsi Palmridge ext7, Mahlabathini Street in Katlehong ward 101 are faced with massive sewer blockage which has been reported numerous times by the DA PR councillor of the ward.
Despite the many attempts of reporting the issue, the ANC/EFF government municipality has failed to fix the sewer permanently, causing it to overflow once a blockage occurs. I recently conducted an oversight visit on the sewer. I have found out that the current issue is the merging of sewage and grey-water drainage systems.
Consequently, backlogs are created within the sewage and the amount of pollution build-up is highly extensive. Increased sewerage and sewerage spills pose a dangerous risk to the health and safety of the settlement’s residents. The nearby residents including the local municipal clinic often complain about unhygienic smells and the waste from the sewer which flows through their residences.
A holistic and integrated approach is needed to improve housing quality and sanitation among Ekurhuleni informal settlements because shelter, access to adequate potable water, and sanitation are basic human needs.
