The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has once again slammed the uncaring ANC and its coalition partners for its decision to pass the uncaring budget which comes into effect on 1 July 2021.

In addition to the over 14% electricity increase approved by the ANC and its coalition partners, the DA is alerting residents that some could be paying up to 67% more on their sanitation bill, due to newly approved tariffs.

Depending on kilolitre (kl) usage, some residents will be shocked at their July municipal bill. Utilising over 65 kl or more per 30-day period will see the new tariff of R69.41 per kl in effect, this is up from the previous amount of a mere R3.85 per kl in the previous year’s budget.

It is appalling that the uncaring ANC and its coalition partners can approve such a budget. This is the same government that hides behind the notion of a ‘pro-poor budget’.

The DA fought relentlessly against this uncaring budget and stood with the residents when we voted against it.

We believe residents are struggling to keep their lights on and stay afloat, yet the uncaring ANC and its coalition partners’ have drastically increased the tariffs. Despite residents having to endure power outages, sewerage leaks and running water, as municipal services are in a state of deterioration.

As the DA, we engaged with communities and businesses to ascertain their needs, it is for this reason that we presented a DA Alternative Budget, where under a DA-led Ekurhuleni, we would impose a 0% increase on sanitation.

The DA is the only party that can bring meaningful change to the City of Ekurhuleni. We will continue to fight for the residents, businesses and communities.
