The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has been inundated with calls and complaints from property owners across the ANC-led City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), highlighting their concerns and frustrations regarding the property valuation roll.

As the DA, we have been fighting against the implementation of the valuation roll which has seen some residents slapped with ridiculous proposed property prices, with some experiencing an increase of 100%.

The ANC and coalition partners governed CoE received around 47 300 objections, of which roughly 10 899 were omission objections and an estimated 36 423 were objections from both public and CoE objected submissions.

We have been pressuring the failing CoE to act swiftly to resolve objections submitted, regarding the property valuation roll. It is concerning, however, that the CoE had only received the omission objections so far, and the next batch of entries, expected to be 19 000, will only be received by the end of September 2021, with the remainder of the objections expected to be received by the end of October 2021.

This delay places unwarranted stress on frustrated and overburdened residents. As the DA, we are in discussion with industry professionals to ensure a resolution on this matter.

We want to remind residents who missed the objection period and believe their properties have been incorrectly valued to fill in the Section 78 query form indicating the market value for their property. Please remember to provide an estate agent or valuer valuation certificate; or an offer to purchase; or proof of purchase, if the property was transferred in the last three years — as supporting documentation.

Should property owners need to make payment arrangements on their municipal accounts, they are encouraged to visit their Customer Care Centre (CCC) where their account is held.

The DA has launched an enquiry into how this roll was compiled; as it is not a true reflection of property values and we are awaiting feedback on this matter.

As the DA, we hear the communities concerns and frustrations and we stand with you.

The DA is the only party that can bring meaningful change to the City of Ekurhuleni. We will continue to fight for the residents, businesses and communities.
