Seven years later: R69 Million fresh produce distribution centre rotting away
by Cllr. Wollaston Labuschagne: DA City of Ekurhuleni Deputy Spokesperson for Economic Development
Date: 28 January 2025
Release: Immediate
Seven years since completion the R69 million distribution centre located at the Ekurhuleni Fresh Produce Market in Springs lies dormant.
Democratic Alliance Ekurhuleni Caucus Leader, Cllr. Brandon Pretorius and I conducted an oversight visit to the market and examined the state of the facility.
Not only is this 5000 square meter facility vacant, but a lack of use and maintenance is starting to become visible.
The R69 million used to construct this facility would have been better served upgrading and carrying out maintenance on the existing market.
From answers provided by ANC Economic Development MMC Nomadlozi Nkosi that 15 so-called Vukuphile Learner Contractors were each paid R1.4 million for “…Construction of Roads, Parking Stormwater and Ancillary Works at Springs Market”.
Despite this spending, it should be noted that the concrete roads and parking areas mentioned are crumbling.
This facility stands as a testament to the lack of foresight and planning of the ANC-EFF coalition.
Once again, this is yet another economic white elephant that comes with a heavy pricetag.
The DA will push to ensure a suitable tenant is found for this facility, not only to generate much needed revenue for the city’s coffers, but to boost the local economy and support emerging entrepreneurs.
