On the 3rd of May 2023 the Sports Heritage Recreation Arts and Culture department’s only Grader was parked at the Sinaba stadium in Daveyton in order to do routine maintenance on facilities in Etwatwa and Daveyton. At some point in the evening, criminals ambushed the security guards and stole R227 820 worth of property.

The negative impact of this brazen act of criminality is that the department is now unable to utilize its own equipment to maintain or develop sports fields.

Although a case has been opened, and the theft of municipal property condemned, no progress appears to have been made in replacing the wheels and tires. Now, months later, the SHRAC department’s only grader sits rusting away at Sinaba stadium.

This image stands in stark contrast to the executive mayor’s acknowledgement that such crimes derail service delivery. While the city is in dire financial straits, questions must be asked about the length of time it has taken to get the grader operational again. The DA will ensure that these questions are asked.
