Date: 28 December 2022

Release: Immediate

Type: Media Statement

What appeared to be a peaceful start to the day for residents of Boksburg on the 24th of December 2022 quickly turned into a tragedy when a massive tanker explosion left a trail of death and devastation in its wake. With 27 of our residents already lost to this tragedy, many still fighting for their lives in the hospital and one person reported missing following the explosion, this tragedy will indeed remain embedded in our memories as a community, for years to come.

The Democratic Alliance and community of Ward 32 are deeply saddened by the tragedy and would like to express their most heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of those who lost their lives in the explosion. We would also like to extend a word of thanks and gratitude to all the public representatives, first responders, officials, non-governmental and non-profit organizations, and members of the public who immediately rolled up their sleeves to bring relief to the residents affected.

We would also like to applaud the interventions from both the Office of the Executive Mayor in Ekurhuleni and the Office of the Gauteng Premier for making resources available to lighten the plight of the families who lost their loved ones.

A special word of thanks also goes out to the Gift of the Givers and all other NPOs, religious formations, and political parties who came together across the political divide to offer support and assistance during the aftermath of the explosion.

As the Councillor for Ward 32, I would like to urge all affected families who require any further assistance to contact me at 0815246950.

We plead with the Minister of Transport and Minister of Energy to work with speed to deploy resources to combat unlawful usage of residential roads to move bulk petroleum, chemicals, liquid gasses, and any other dangerous goods, as it has become prevalent in our communities. The reopening of railway lines must also be fast-tracked to reduce the unlawful use of suburban roads to transport dangerous goods.

We would like to wish all residents in the hospital, a speedy recovery and again would like to extend our sincerest condolences to all families of those who have lost their lives to the tragedy.

May their departed souls rest in peace.
