Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The DA in the City of Ekurhuleni in conjunction with celebrating World Earth Day, 2022, welcomes the passing of the Sustainable Waste Management Motion.

World Earth day is an annual global observation of environmental issues affecting the planet and the celebration of the greater protection of the planet through increased environmental legislation and policies.

This year, the theme for Earth Day is, “Invest in Our Planet” which is what the Sustainable Waste Management motion, that was passed by council in March 2022 encompasses.

Upon implementation, this motion will give legislative powers to the Environmental Resource and Waste Management department to:

• Prioritize the impending Waste Crisis, which threatens to overwhelm an inadequately prepared City of Ekurhuleni.

• Drive the separation of Organic and Inorganic Waste streams into a sustainable, cost effective waste collection transformation.

• Provide legislative support by expediting the process of establishing e-waste recycling and buy-back centres as Part of Public — Private Partnerships.

• Through prioritization of the Waste Sector as a strategic market and resource, drive job creation through implementation of the Circular Economy.

• Conduct Service point audits for waste management for the entire metro — efficiently and cost effectively.

• Declare Waste Management as an essential service

• Shredding of garden waste at all feasible landfill sites.

• Independent power producer agreements for landfill gas extraction and power generation at all viable landfill sites with further Public-Private Partnerships.

• Full utilization of rubble crushing at Simmer & Jack Landfill site

The DA in Ekurhuleni welcomes efforts by the Multi-Party Coalition in passing the much needed motion and the on-going assistance form organisations within the Metro to help make Ekurhuleni a cleaner, greener and more sustainable City that is responsive to the service delivery needs of residents and our planet.
