As we reflect on the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence (GBV), the Democratic Alliance Caucus in Ekurhuleni applauds the Executive Mayor, Alderman Tania Campbell’s call to action this week.
Instead of the 16 days of activism as commemorated each year, on our agenda, we should advocate for 365 days of activism.
Access to basic services such as primary healthcare, transportation, visible policing, and indigent support continue to be vital tools in the reduction of GBV and the promotion of equality and social cohesion in our society. We are heartened by the Executive Mayor’s dedicated commitment to ensuring that these provisions continue in a stable and sustainable manner.
As a caucus, we commit ourselves to 365 days of activism, in which our resolve will not waver, as we support whole-of-society efforts that seek to empower women and girls in our city, dismantle systems that perpetuate oppression and violence, and acknowledge the role that men and women of all ages must play as we work together to achieve this goal.
