The DA in Ekurhuleni sends its Sincerest Condolences to the Families of those who have been Fatally Injured and affected by the Gas Explosion in Boksburg

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni would like to offer its sincerest condolences to the families of the victims who have been fatally injured in the gas explosion of an LPG tanker in Plantation, Boksburg, this morning.

An assessment of the scene by the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) revealed that the gas tanker passed under a low-lying bridge where the gas release valve got caught and bent over, resulting in a fire and subsequently, an explosion.

The explosion left in its wake, 8 fatalities and 26 serious injuries. Several vehicles were also destroyed in the explosion and nine houses were damaged, including a hospital, leaving the families affected in dire need of assistance.

Although the City has been quick in its response to assist the victims affected by the disaster, residents are urged to assist with any form of aid to help the families who have lost their homes and belongings during the explosion.

We also welcome the response from the Executive Mayor, Ald. Tania Campbell, to ensure that a comprehensive investigation takes place so that those who are liable are brought to book.

In the interim, we urge that residents refrain from sharing any video footage or photographs of the scene, in respect of the families of the individuals who have been fatally injured and are being treated in the hospital.

Residents have also been requested to stay away from the scene until the DEMS department has concluded its work.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those who were seriously injured during the explosion as well as to those who are currently receiving medical attention and are in recovery.
