Date: 25 August 2022
Release: Immediate
Note to Editors: The following statement is a speech that was delivered by DA Spokesperson for MPAC in Ekurhuleni, Cllr. Alta de Beer, during an Ordinary Council Meeting held on the 25th of August 2022.
Good Morning Speaker,
Speaker please allow me to wish the EM, the Chair of Chairs, our women elected MMC’s and Chairpersons, our City Manager, all women councilors, all women officials, our women in uniform, our teachers, our Gogo’s, women in business and our youthful women a very happy Women’s month. We acknowledge your contributions and dedication to our City!
Speaker the DA welcomes the changes to the Indigent Policy to make the indigent qualification criteria more accessible for child-headed households.
The following changes are progressive and fully supported by the DA;
- The clarification of the definition of a child-headed household,
- Municipal value of property does not exceed R1 500 000 as reflected in the valuation roll of the City; and
- Any person above the age of 18 who does not have a source of income will have to apply for indigent assistance through submission of application forms.
The above changes will not only bring relief to child-headed households that are battling financially but will also make the benefit more accessible for more child-based households to qualify, more especially by raising the property value qualification criteria from R150 000 to R 1 500 000.
Further the indigent policy benefits include basic services relief in terms of energy and water supply, sanitation and refuse removal services.
The DA would like to thank and congratulate the EM, the Executive and the Multi-Party Coalition for bringing forward this much welcomed relief to child-headed households.
I thank you Speaker.
Cllr. Alta de Beer
