The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni welcomes the progressive move by the City to allow the Thanda Inja Project free use of the Mbikwa Cindi Hall, in Ward 68.
Since 2013, the Thanda Inja Project in partnership with State Vets from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) and private practice veterinarians have provided the residents of Daveyton and Etwatwa with veterinary welfare services. Previously they had to set up their pop-up clinic with a Gazebo in an open field in Gabon, Daveyton, which forced residents and volunteer veterinarians to endure inclement weather conditions. The Thanda Inja Project also had to maintain high hygiene standards against a lack of electricity and running water.
By granting Thanda Inja right of entry to the Mbikwa Cindi hall, the City of Ekurhuleni has provided much-needed support to the NPO, which will also allow them to continue their work without interruption and boost access to free veterinary services to the residents of Daveyton and Etwatwa, without needing to face the elements, and with improved hygiene and comfort for all.
These services have and will continue to immensely benefit many within the Daveyton-Etwatwa community who do not have access to private veterinary care. The services provided by Thanda Inja also lightens the load on the city’s pound service obligations and helps Ekurhuleni better ensure the health and safety of its residents.
Lastly, we would like to thank Pug Rescue South Africa, the originators of the Thanda Inja project, who saw a need within the community of Daveyton and found a way to address it despite facing many obstacles. In doing so, they have contributed to the protection of public health through the vaccination of pets, as well as reduced the number of animals on the streets through sterilisation.
It is good deeds such as these that showcase how we can all work together to ensure that the City of Ekurhuleni is a city that is responsive to the service delivery needs of its residents.
