Release: Immediate
Type: Media statement
The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni applauds the Multi-Party Coalition for employing 286 Meter Readers in the City.
The employment of these meter readers stems from the metro having received a string of complaints around consumers being billed irregularly for water and electricity. This is because bills were based on estimated consumption instead of regular meter readings.
A regular Meter reading will ensure accountability and will go a long way in significantly improving the city’s revenue collection, which will in turn enhance service delivery.
Further, the employment of these meter readers will also assist to alleviate the unemployment rate within the City, whilst also improving billing accuracy through extensive meter readings, that will also allow for the City to identify meters that have been breached or tampered with. This will go a long way in reducing electricity theft.
In addition, we welcome the Finance Department’s Open Day Roadshows, whereby residents of Ekurhuleni are invited to go to different Customer Care Centres to get assistance and information on all Finance related queries.
These queries include the Indigent Registration process, Account and Billing queries, the Debt Rehabilitation Incentive, Property Valuation and the Siyakhokha Registration to mention a few.
