Update on Street Light Repairs in Ward 31

by Cllr. Simangele Sabe — DA Councillor in Ward 31, Ekurhuleni

Date: 19 September 2022

Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The Democratic Alliance in Ward 31 is aware of the problems that have been caused by non-functioning street lights such as an increase in crime, safety concerns and poor road visibility at night.

As the Ward Councillor, I am pleased to see that under the new administration we are moving forward and would like to update residents on street light repairs that are currently underway.

The teams on the ground are currently in Vandyk Park doing work in areas such as Mimmosa Street, Keurboom Street, Kiaat Street and Kershout Street to name a few.

Further, we have also received the following feedback from the Energy Department:

  • Daily maintenance is being done on streetlights, please bear in mind that theft and vandalism of infrastructure is happening on daily, as streetlights are easily accessible for illegal connections and theft.
  • Residents may notice that some streetlights are on 24/7, this is due to all the streetlights on our network being controlled by a photo-cell device but unfortunately most have been stolen, we are however in the process to replace them gradually.

As the DA, we welcome the much-needed repairs and we would like to urge residents to continue reporting non-functioning streetlights.
